Description

Women in Ministry is a topic that even in the 21st century is still controversial. It is a topic whose conclusion most likely will not be settled until Jesus returns. The Bible certainly has a definitive ruling on women in ministry, but interpretations vary to a great degree dependent upon who is providing the interpretation. While the controversies continue people needing to hear a word from the Lord are being overlooked and neglected and opportunities for introduction to salvation being missed.

God spoke in Isaiah 40 stating, “who will go for me?” and the answer rang out from an unlikely source, as Isaiah spoke, “here am I send me”. What a simplistic response to a great and grave responsibility. Many women are saying, “Here am I send me”, but the response in many instances comes back, this is not a role for women.

Such is the case today, and such was the case over 125 years ago, when a courageous woman, Mrs. Julia A. J. Foote penned an autobiographical sketch, entitled, “A Brand Plucked from the Fire” taken from Zechariah 3:2. This scripture highlights the narrow escape that a sinner makes from eternal death as he or she professes faith in Jesus Christ. Prior to that profession the sinner is waiting to be judged unto eternal fires. But by grace through faith the sinner is rescued unto salvation.

When I reflect on women in ministry many thoughts come to mind. There are many old wives-tales and ill-advised sayings that do more harm than good. They include:

“A preaching woman and a crowing hen will both come to no good end”

“Ministry is an old boys club, no women allowed”

“Men won’t follow a preaching woman, and most women won’t either”

“None of the apostle’s was a woman, so God did not intend for women to carry His Word”

All of these sayings are certainly cruel and even harmful to everyone that has heard them and even perpetuated them as truth. They are stereotypes that bring division rather than unity in Christ. But, these sayings continue on from the lips of both men and women. Though the times have changed, the centuries have moved forward, but the thinking is to a large degree the same.

Much can be learned from the autobiography of Mrs. Julia A. J. Foote as her life spanned from 1823-1900. She provides a wonderful narrative of history from the circa 1800’s, along with a personal accounting of women’s rights and struggles both pre and post slavery. Her eloquent writing style paints graphic pictures of life before and after her call to ministry. Commentary will be provided at the end of the book so that reading the Foote autobiography can take its full course of empathetic understanding before contemporary analysis is made by commentators, Pearson and Callion.

As you begin reading the story of Julia A. J. Foote, may your heart be opened to the struggles of women in ministry, their survival, and triumph in Jesus Christ.
